Leaves are falling, wood smoke is in the air, and I get to discover what the moths have left of my sweaters; it is time to talk Winter Baroque. I got the band back together with frontman Amelia Sie on lead violin, Alessandra Yang doing harmony on viola d'amore, Eliana Razzino Yang and Nicola Canzano on rhythm (cello and harpsichord); life is good.

As per tradition, the program, a kind of musical comfort food, presents baroque music including a unique world premiere written in a period (baroque) style. Commissioned just for this concert from our harpsicord player/Juilliard-faculty Canzano, the piece, "Our Towne,” (working title) is a character work illustrating a half dozen or so 18th century Newburyport personages. Did you know George Washington visited Newburyport on October 30^th, 1789 and spent the night at 65 State Street (now the library)?

The concert opens with some German High Baroque by Fasch and also includes stormy Italian music by Marcello and Castello; a mysterious Biber sonata for violin; and the emotional depth of a Bach sarabande for solo cello. Garth Knox’s duo with violin will showcase the viola d’amore’s (literally “viola of love”) silvery sound.

We take the idea of community seriously and want anyone to attend who can; as we always do for larger concerts, ALL tickets are pay-what-you-can.

We have two Winter Baroque concerts this year, one in Newburyport and the other in Andover. The program is just an hour and a quarter with no intermission so, on Sunday, you can get back in time for Christmas dinner.

Tickets go on sale November 1^st.
